Bleaching Aftercare for Face: First 72 Hours and Do's & Don'ts
By Beauty Care - Meenu | October 13, 2026
The #1 rule after facial bleaching is simple: keep your skin calm. That means no sun, no makeup, no scrubbing, and no heavy sweating for at least the first 24 to 72 hours. I’m sharing this because people come to me for services like facials and clean-ups specifically because they feel relaxing and de-stressing, and I want your bleaching appointment in Troy to feel that easy too, even after you leave.
Bleaching is a quick service in my studio, and it’s priced at $15. The aftercare is what protects the result and keeps you from getting that “why is my skin irritated?” moment later that day.
First 24 hours after facial bleaching: keep it cool, clean, and hands-off
Right after bleaching, your skin tends to be a little more reactive. In South-central Troy, especially if you’re running around Big Beaver Road or the Somerset Collection area, it’s easy to forget and touch your face or throw on makeup. Try to keep things boring for one day. Your skin will thank you.
Quick rules for today: No makeup, no hot water, and no rubbing or picking at the area.
Do this
- If you need to cleanse, use cool to lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Keep it gentle and quick.
- Pat dry. Don’t drag a towel across your skin.
- If you feel warm or itchy, use a cool compress for a few minutes at a time.
Skip this
- Makeup on the bleached area for at least 24 hours. Powders, foundation, and concealer can sting and clog when skin is freshly treated.
- Hot showers, steam, and face steaming devices. Heat tends to make redness hang around longer.
- Exfoliating cleansers, scrubs, cleansing brushes, and acne “spot” products.
48 to 72 hours: sun and sweat are the two biggest troublemakers
If you do one thing for the next few days, protect your skin from sun and overheating. In Troy’s four-season weather, people sometimes skip SPF in fall and winter because it doesn’t feel sunny. But UV still hits your face, and freshly treated skin can look patchy or irritated if it’s not protected.
And sweating matters too. Heavy exercise, saunas, hot yoga, and even rushing around errands can irritate the area. I’ve had plenty of clients tell me they come in for facials because they leave feeling “relaxing” and “de-stressed.” Keep that same energy after bleaching. Take the easier route for a couple days if you can.
If you’re near Big Beaver Road or the Somerset Collection: plan your bleaching appointment so you’re not doing a long outdoor walk right after. A hat and SPF help, but the easiest win is avoiding direct sun for the first couple days.
A simple post-bleach skincare routine (morning + night) that doesn’t irritate
You don’t need a complicated routine after bleaching. You need a calm routine. This is what I generally recommend for post-bleach skincare, including bleached upper lip care where the skin is thinner and more likely to feel sensitive.
Morning (takes 2 minutes)
- Gentle cleanser (or a water rinse if you’re feeling sensitive)
- Fragrance-free moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day, even when it’s cloudy
Night (keep it gentle)
- Gentle cleanse, cool to lukewarm water
- Moisturizer, and if you’re dry from the season, go a little richer as temps drop in Troy
If you need extra soothing, a thin layer of aloe vera or a fragrance-free hydrating gel can help. Keep it simple and avoid products with fragrance or alcohol for a few days.
When you can restart actives (retinol, AHA/BHA) and what’s normal vs not
A little redness or mild stinging can happen after facial bleaching. It usually settles down when you stop touching the area and keep heat and friction out of the picture.
Hold off on active ingredients
I generally recommend waiting 7 to 10 days before you bring back retinol, AHA, or BHA, or until your skin feels fully calm again. If you restart too soon, that’s when you see more irritation, dryness, and uneven texture.
Reach out if: you notice intense burning, blistering, swelling that doesn’t calm down, or pain that feels out of proportion. I’ll talk you through next steps, and if it sounds beyond normal irritation, I’ll tell you to get medical care.

If you’re driving in from Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Royal Oak, Rochester Hills, Clawson, or Madison Heights, the goal is the same: leave with a nice, even look and keep your skin calm on the way home. If something feels off after bleaching, don’t wait it out in silence. Let me know and I’ll help you sort out what’s normal and what needs attention.
If you want to go deeper on timing, I also wrote what to do in the first 72 hours after bleaching. And if you’re comparing services, bleaching vs highlights breaks down the difference in plain language.

Quick reminder: the easiest bleaching aftercare is a calm routine
Keep your hands off your face, avoid heat and sweat for 48 to 72 hours, and wear SPF 30+ daily. If you stick to that, most irritation issues never start.
